Making a Voi Weight

For those who either have a 35×84 already or who don’t want to buy a voi and prefer to get the pieces and make it themselves, here is the much requested how-to 🙂

What you’ll need… (on things from Home of Poi* use the code “Dyed4you” to get a discount)

  • 35×84 or other size veil, preferably 5mm weight
  • matching silk bag (be sure to let me know it’s for a voi so I do the right size!)
  • keyring
  • needle and thread to match silk bag
  • duct tape
  • rod coupling nut (5/8″-11 x 2-1/8″) – I usually find it in isle 14 of Home Depot (weighs approx 5oz)
  • foam pipe cover
  • *length of ball chain (I use about 17″)
  • *pro handle (I prefer single loop)
  • *2 quicklinks (per voi)
  • *2 type A couplings
  • wire cutters (to cut chain)
  • pliers (to secure couplings to chain)

By the way I do know the difference between my elbow and wrist 😉

  1. Thanks for sharing Meghan!!! Might have to do this 🙂 I would just be afraid of hitting someone 🙁 I was worshiping with my Large wing “River of Life” on Tuesday and all of a sudden I hit something “someone” 🙁 Someone had come up front and I don’t always have my eyes open, I was moving the wing to the left and oops. We both felt bad, she was ok just a little hit, lol

  2. Very nice video 🙂 And yes, the silk can come off, lol. If it does, keep dancing 🙂

  3. Awesome… I love these how to’s. Thank you so much.

  4. Sweet! Thanks Meghan!

  8. Thanks for the info, took me a while to find it but definitely worth the search… My voi are great!

  9. Hey Meghan,

thank you very much for this how-to-video.
I’m from Germany and the HOP Website is the best online shop I ever saw. I could buy in Euro via Paypal and it was cheaper than in my homecountry. But I don’t know where to find the coupling nut. Can you tell me the weight of it, so that my husband is able to find an alternative?

    You ministry is heavenly 😉
    Be blessed
    Jenny

    1. Great question! It weighs about 5oz. Hope you find a good substitute 🙂

  10. Hi! I have a question, I just bought fabric for the veils for my poi and can very easily make a weighted bag to attach the silks to, but how do you actually attach the silks to the weights? Thanks!

    ~A slightly confused Savannah

    1. Just knot the silk onto the keyring that is attached to your weight 🙂 Hope that helps!

  11. Yep! Thanks!

  12. Hello Meghan,

I was wondering if you still use this method in constructing your voi?

    1. It sure is, Jennifer 🙂

  13. Thank you! I’m so excited to construct my own!
